“Perfect Pitcher” Roki Sasaki, 21, threw a three-inning perfect game in the postseason.
Sasaki started Game 1 of the Pacific League Climax Series against the SoftBank Hawks on Thursday at ZOZO Marine Stadium in Chiba, Japan.
Chiba Lotte finished with a 70-55 record and a .5072 winning percentage, one game ahead of third-place SoftBank with a 71-39 record and a .5071 winning percentage, for second place in the league.
Sasaki appeared in 15 games this season, posting a 7-4 record with a 1.78 ERA. Injuries have kept him out of many games. In May, he was sidelined for three weeks with a blistered finger.
Then, in his first start of the second half, on July 24 against SoftBank, he suffered a side injury that sidelined him for two months. He returned to action on September 10 against the Orix with a faster-than-expected rehabilitation, but he was not fully healthy and threw only three innings in each of his two starts.
On September 24, he was unable to pitch against Softbank due to a fever and was eventually removed from the roster due to COVID-19. He ended his season early and has been preparing for a postseason appearance.
Sasaki faced the first batter he faced against SoftBank in the first inning and threw a 161-kilometer fastball that was induced by a fielder’s choice. He followed with a grounder to the second baseman and a swinging strikeout to end the inning.
In the second inning, he topped out at 162 mph and ended the inning with a strikeout, a fly ball to center field, and a grounder to shortstop. In the third, he got back-to-back strikeouts with a forked ball and then retired nine straight batters on a fly ball to center field.
He was removed in the fourth inning with a 2-0 lead. Sasaki threw 41 pitches in three innings, allowing no hits, no walks and four strikeouts. His fastball touched 162 mph twice.스포츠토토
