The official opening game of Taipei Dome was completely defeated in Korea, but…Bears’ next-generation left-hander ‘2K’ left-hander left a strong impression

South Korea’s national team, coached by Lee Jung-myung, was swept by Chinese Taipei at the 30th Asian Baseball Championship. But Doosan Bears’ next-generation left-hander Lee Byung-hun’s “2K” performance impressed.굿모닝토토 주소

South Korea lost 0-4 to Chinese Taipei on Dec. 3 in the opening game of the 30th Asian Baseball Championship, which also served as the official opening game of the Taipei Dome Stadium. South Korea was held scoreless by the Taiwanese pitching staff, which totaled four hits. After giving up three runs in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fourth, Korea was unable to overcome the deficit.

Korea was held to 10 strikeouts in seven innings by Taiwanese starter HSU Jo-Shi, who was followed by SUN Yi-Lei, who pitched two scoreless innings. At the plate, Kim Sung-woo (LG Twins), who batted eighth, had two hits.

Shin Heon-min (SSG Landers) gave up three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning, followed by Woo Kang-hoon (Lotte Giants) with one run in 3.2 innings, Lee Byung-heon (Doosan Bears) with one hit and two strikeouts, and Kim Dong-hyuk (Kiwoom Heroes) and Jung Hyun-soo (Songwon University senior/Lotte Giants draftee) with one hit and one strikeout in 0.2 innings, but the bullpen effectively shut down the Taiwanese offense.

Lee Byung-heon’s performance was a small consolation for Doosan fans, as the “National Hitter” has been identified by manager Lee Seung-yeop as a key player in the left-handed bullpen for the 2024 season. Lee appeared in 36 games (27 innings) in 2023, posting a 4.67 ERA in five starts with 28 strikeouts and 22 walks.

After the 2023 season, Lee gained valuable experience by traveling with the national team to the Tokyo Dome as part of the reserve roster for the Asian Professional Baseball Confederation (APBC). Between that and this tournament in early December, Lee has been working tirelessly on his game. It was certainly encouraging to see him throw two shutout innings against a tough Taiwanese batting lineup. It’s a promising sign for the 2024 season.

Meanwhile, Korea will travel to Taichung to continue the preliminary round and will face Hong Kong in the second game of the preliminary round on December 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the Intercontinental Stadium.

South Korea is drawn in Group A alongside Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Palestine in the tournament. The top two teams from the group stage will advance to the Super Round, where the combined record of their two Super Round games along with their qualifying round record will be used to determine the finalists.
