North Korea’s coach talks about his team’s first international victory in five years.
North Korea defeated Chinese Taipei 2-0 in their men’s soccer group F match at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games at Jinhua Zhejiang Normal University Stadium in Hangzhou, China on Monday.
In the post-match press conference, North Korea head coach Kim Jong Nam said, “I’m satisfied. My players played well,” he said briefly.
It was North Korea’s first international tournament in five years. North Korea has been absent from international sporting events since the 2018 Asian Games in Palembang, Jakarta, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had suspended the country, but the ban expired at the end of last year, opening the way for North Korea to compete. “We haven’t been able to compete (in international events) for the past four years, but we’ve been able to maintain our performance in domestic competitions,” said coach Kim Yong Nam.
North Korea won 2-0 against Chinese Taipei earlier in the day, with goals from Ri Cho-guk and Kim Kuk-jin. “They followed the instructions completely well,” said coach Kim Jong-nam of the two players. That’s why they performed so well.”
He was coy about his goals for the tournament. “The result was good, but I’m not thinking about the next one. The future is important,” he vowed.
He also didn’t talk about North Korea’s strength easily. “I’m sorry, but I can’t talk about the strength of the team because the game is ongoing. I’m sorry, but I can’t talk about it because the game is going on.”
“We will do our best to win the next game,” he said.
When asked about facing the South Korean national soccer team, he said, “On the field, you have to win. If we get the chance, we will definitely try to win,” he said.스포츠토토
Five female North Korean cheerleaders, dressed in matching outfits and hats, sat in the stands, banging on balloons and cheering enthusiastically. The five women’s chants for the North Korean team were not drowned out. “The supporters’ cheers will give our players great inspiration and strength, and they will be able to show their abilities on the field,” said coach Kim Yong Nam.
